There is something magical that happens when I start to manipulate my images in Photoshop to convert into a bitmap file so that the laser cutter can compute the date in order for the machine to etch the plywood plate. The image has to be augmented into a certain type of date file in order for it to manifest as something physical when the plate is made. I find this fascinating and it is fuelling my desire to explore this further. This also relates to my concept of the outside / inside, and the digital / physical. Using my imagery of natural forms relates to the most organic type of body and references the outside perfectly. This then works in conjunction with the inside, where I am working in the studio environment. As I continue to consider this relationship another ‘inside’ appears, which is that of the digital. I am very excited to delve deeper into this growing side of my practice.
I feel that the image of the tree is not important, it acts as a starting point for me to commence exploring but what I am most drawn to is what is happening on the screen and how the computer program has interpreted the sections of the paper where there are no drawn marks. It’s like something is happening out of nothing.
