Nearing the End…..

Working on third 10m print
My final 10m roll print is nearly complete, where one more print session will allow the time to view and finish the print. This print looks totally different from the previous two due to the size of the pixels. When I started the print I was struggling to see it come together like the previous two. I was letting the aesthetic get in the way…..this can be a challenging time to navigate as I am always using the eyes to consider the work and the gaze can be a pulling factor. What is important is the process and how the print develops, decisions have to be made but I try to not let the perceived beauty of the print sway me. As I was printing the various sections I was still not convinced the print was working in terms of how the different components interacted. But this is the whole point, to observe how they interact with each other. I have planned the print and prepared the screen in advance and had another layer to work with. Once this part of the screen was working into the print the work started to come together how I envisaged. It was that electrifying moment when you see all the desperate parts converse and something starts to happen.

It's an interesting moment to be in when you start to reject the visual qualities of the work and let the making process come to the front. I really feel my practice has developed, where I can better articulate my work and be confident in what I am doing. The next stage of this print is to look at the interactions between the pixelated forms and that of the linear fragments, where they intersect and overlap. I am then going to cut out sections which plates into the positive and negative effects of the previous prints. There is then potential to use these fragments as stand alone prints in themselves....could they be displayed with the roll of print, dotted around the space or be placed as hidden fragments. I am constantly thinking of that next step in my work and how the work will eventually be in a presentation space.
