Photography Workshop Playing it’s Role in the Test Exhibition

One of the most enjoyable and productive sessions I attended was the photography workshop that was organised for us. I initially felt I did not have the time to attend but was so glad I did as could see the value that could be brought to my work. This proved to be a great opportunity to collaborate with a group of peers and help each other photograph our work. This session allowed me to work with one of my hybrid prints and experiment with photographing the work in different positions. The work came alive when I used orange trestle legs to support the work. The orange of the frame picked up on the orange in the print and become an integral component to the work. It acted as a support and also as an extension of the composition.

The experience was fantastic and demonstrated the value of taking the time to plan and take good photographs of your work. The activity also brought my work into a different space so provided the opportunity to observe the work in an alternative setting. Following on from the more traditional shot on the blue background, I stated to take photos of the work resting at different angles using the orange trestle legs. Colour played an important role as I used the tones in the work to inform the choice of background and supporting features. I think the sensitivity I took to the surrounding environment such as the black painted skirting on the rear wall and using this to amplify the dark horizontal tones in the work crested an excellent portrayal of the work. This activity of leaning the hybrid print in different configurations informed my display for the test exhibition. It also provided a solution for displaying my black-on-black prints and how they would interplay with the floor lamps I had.
