Intuition is something that drives my practice and the development of my printmaking, I’m constantly looking at ways to push my imagery; this is fulled by my experiments and what feels like the next logical step to take. As I work in a more digital way, attempting to find new routes for creating my work, the use of digital copying and scanning seems like that next logical next step. I follow this scent to uncover the clues i'm searching for to unlock that next move in my work. This is what I feel intuition is - it’s going with your gut and pushing the possibilities of what a print can be. This all stemmed from my vacuum packing experiments, observing the interaction between the two surfaces. I have been considering bringing photocopying and scanning into my work as feel this can also be an interesting way of creating editions. Not through the traditional sense but in a new modern and digital way! The scanned images of the vacuum packed branch were really interesting and I could observe the different colours appearing where the light of the scanner has travelled through the plastic. This made me go on to scan and photocopy my hybrid prints on canvas.
Photocopying the surface of the hybrid print
My instincts told me to open the photocopier cover and observe what happened, the whole screen was covered so would be safe to look at the print in motion. What I saw was amazing and I had to record the result. The light shining through the surface of the print and moving across the image projected the imagery on the other side. This process of experimentation was the work in itself but required a mode of translation so that this could be presented to the viewer. I therefore filmed the motion of the copier scanning the surface and the resulting image as the mechanism traveled to read the information of the canvas. I then went on to make a lopped film where I stitched together the same scene at a reduced frame rate to produce the below video. My intention was to then present this on a monitor that would be positioned on the floor with other works as part of my test exhibition.
