Today has been a productive day in terms of viewing my imagery and developing the digital language of my prints. Scale is an important part of my work in terms of how the compositions are presented and how the viewer observes my work. Planning time to display work in my studio space so I can step back and take the time to look at the results is vitally important.
Viewing a section of leftover print through the digital screen
I use Photoshop very much like a printing press by exploring texture, surface and layering of images. The above image is of the leftover newsprint following a printmaking session. There are often interesting fragments left from the making process on the usually discarded supporting sheets of newsprint; I keep these as they offer themselves as additional material and retain ghost marks from the previous print. The texture in the above image was very appealing and felt this could be used as a layer in one of my compositions. Using this as a layer in photoshop in the previously pictured work lent itself extremely well as a base layer, offering texture and colour to the print. What I am able to do here is use physical paraphernalia to act as agents in my digits prints and further enhance my process of working between physical and digital realms. They combine to create a hybrid work that offers many points of departure. From this, I have continued to explore this building technique which allows me to circumnavigate the traditional printing press and develop an extensive range of images.
What really draws my attention is the unique things that happen when I'm interacting with my work on the screen. The above image displays a black selection box that appeared when I was cropping the image in photoshop, I instantly took a screen shot to capture the moment and worked this into the further developed image. The perspective of the digital screen draws me in where I am able to focus in on details of my work, manipulate the image and print out at a larger scale. This has now made me consider more larger works than can printed out at an A0 since and circumnavigate the printing press altogether.
